Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a rear Bagger for my new lawn tractor cuz they r on sale & wonder if they r really worth the money. I have no leaves just grass. Is it good for the lawn to have they grass bagged? Or left on the lawn??
It is best cut fine and distributed evenly on the lawn where it drops between the blades of grass and decomposes forming a mulch layer.
To work effectively you must cut a little often and not a lot occasionally.
If you can not organize yourself to do that then bagging is the next best thing
It can become the basis for making compost heaps and really enriching your soil.
Like mulching, bagging requires special blades and some decks will never bag properly and others will never mulch properly.
So start by telling us what you are thinking of hanging the bagger off
make & model number if you please.
Engine size because bagging gobbles up power and most important deck size and type.
I bought a new 52-inch Hustler last year and was also thinking about buying the rear bagger. Not for $500. I am going to buy a set of mulching blades for it and let it go at that.

You say your using a Craftsman self propelled mower in you profile but you refer to a lawn tractor in your post. I'd have to ask about the mower and what it is to give an informed answer. Generally speaking I'd say collection system isn't a preferred method on a lawn tractor. On a smaller self propelled mower maybe. The Blade tip speed of the mower has a lot to do with the method of cutting your mower is capable of or preforming and what type of cut you'll end up with.
Normally I'd say get a set of G3 Gator blades but if you don't have enough BTS they wont cut well and will leave clumps and grass all over the place and if that's the case then the collection system wouldn't be your best option. Check with your dealer and ask them what the BTS of your mower is and if your 17000 BTS and greater then go with the G3 if not I'd go with the collection system while it's on sale. The blades would definitely be cheaper.
Also remember that baggers are dirty so no more mowing in your singlet.
That mower will bag fine order it with the high lift blade if you decide to go that way.
Also beware that the bagger chute adds another 4" to 6" to your deck so it might get tight in places.
Consider a sweeper instead. My DYT4000 does not like the weight of 3 full up containers of damp grass and the engine temperature rises quickly. I would not buy baggers again . But...in fall , with patience, you can clean up fallen dry or freeze dried leaves with the baggers.
I just bought a riding mower with a bagger on it and I have to say I'm very happy with how much it actually bags. I have kids and frequent outside gatherings so the amount of grass that would get tracked in my house before was frustrating. This is the first time I had a bagger and I have to say, after I mowed, my wife and I walked around the yard for ten minutes and checked our shoes and maybe had one small piece of grass on our shoes, compared to it being covered in grass. To me, well worth it having a bagger. Wife doesn't have to clean up grass in the house and as they say, happy wife, happy life.
