I fixed a neighbor’s almost new Toro last year. To my amazement the engine was made in China. No name. But it was very similar to a Chinese made Kohler on an Ariens that I fixed a year before. The Ariens carb was dirty. A year later, the kid I gave the mower to brought it back. The carb looked clean but after another cleaning, the mower ran well. I recently saw a Taryl Fixes All video where he worked on a Cub Cadet that had a similar engine. He wasn’t a fan. I actually was impressed by the engineering on the China Kohler. Every fastener was a 10mm and easy to access. The carbs are easy to remove, which is good because in accordance with my experience and many others on the internet, they gunk up with regularity. The almost new Toro had an auto-choke that was stuck closed. Again, the design was elegantly simple. But the linkage needed some lube and the choke some exercise. The engines run smoothly…until the carb clogs up.
I think that Toro still makes a good mower and would recommend one if you are looking for a new walk behind mower, but buyer beware. Look for one with a Briggs, unless you like cleaning carbs.
I have two Honda’s. They are superb machines. But Honda stopped making gas mowers, so who knows how long parts will be available. Plus, the ones I have are top of the line and are heavy heavy heavy. I use my Toro much more than one of my Honda’s.
