Why not just take a pair of large Vise-Grips, pull the ring gear back together where it is cracked. Weld it right there and into the flywheel, put two more welds on it approximately the same size at 120 degree intervals and then it should be able to start from the starter motor.

Good luck.

Turns out, this is exactly what I did.
Local farmer guy who's opinion I respect suggested a local engineering firm, dropped in and the owner took my request for a coupla spot welds to heart and although it's cast iron he put in a weld on the crack and the other 3 quadrants, with grinding all up cost AUD$10, that being about 2 dimes.
Put it all back together, and applied a new battery via jumper leads and outstanding, it started.
Much dragging sround of stuffs.
