I have my buddies Honda HRT216 SDA CGV160 mower that hasn't run for years according to him. I got it running but the hand control really doesn't do much for the engine speed. It will choke and start but the difference between WOT and idle is very minimal. Also as it runs after a few minutes it all of a sudden will just die off. I have the air cleaner off while doing this and when it goes to die it has a slight pop. I do not know what my buddy played with on adjustment nor do I know what good running adjustments are. I down loaded the mower manual and engine manuals but neither really describe the components well or detailed adjustments. I checked the float and it moves freely and fills the bowl. When it shuts off there is still fuel in the bowl. I thought maybe it was just running on the bowl fuel and shutting off but tha tdoesn't seem to be the case. So if you can, please throw some ideas at me. I an very mechanically inclined, especially with autos but mower I never messed with too much.

Thanks!

Hello Doug & WELCOME to LMF....

This engine is also used on a few power washers.... they seem to have sticky valve issues. You can try various carb cleaner sprays & fuel additives, they may eventually clean it up.
Your popping sound points to this.

but if you run a good synthetic engine oil, Like Rotella T6... Sticking valves problems should be reduced...

You can take the valve cover off and see how free the valves seem to be...... :smile:KennyV

I'm getting back on this. I've had the mower sitting since last Sept. I got it started again today but after a while the engine just dies off. You cannot play with the throttle to keep it refiring. It dies off like it has no gas. Another pull or two and it fires up and then again dies off after about 90 seconds of running. It's pretty consistant with the amount of time it runs before shutting off. Any ideas?

Thanks,

The normal problem with Hondas is carb.

Strip and rebuild the carb. If you can get it cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner then clean with carb cleaner should do the job.
Make sure the gaskets are all ok before fitting

I have experience with this same situation with a 5 horse Briggs & Stratton motor. It would run and quit for no apparent reason just like you describe. It turned out to be the valves sticking. The hotter the motor got the more they would stick and shut off. When I took the valves out the shafts were coated with dried oil. If you take the cylinder head off the valves will appear to move normally. You must take them out to see this. I used a wire wheel to remove the dried oil from the valve shafts and curled a piece of sandpaper so it would fit in the valve shaft hole in the block and cleaned all the dried oil out of it. - All better.
