We're only a few days in to owning and operating a whole house fan, but it is incredible how much difference it has made in comfort. We haven't had the really hot weather yet (it's coming) but it's really been awesome.

Friends of mine had a system like that and it kept the house the same temp year round, the only problem she found was that she never really knew the temp outside whether it be cold or hot.

Whole house fans are great ... when you are in a moderate climate area... Or if you are disciplined enough to watch the outside temp/humidity.... But in the extreme changes we see in south central Kansas your opportunity for using it is very limited.
For every cubic foot of air you push out of your house a replacement cubic foot has to come in...
Yesterday for example the high hit 104 degrees the LOW over night 84 degrees with a high humidity... bringing any of that in is not good... when we do have pleasant overnight temps it is usually accompanied with very high humidity...

If you are in an area that has temp humidity that allows bringing in outside air you can save a lot on AC bills. If not you will only increase your AC run time... I do envy places that have more reasonable summer temps... KennyV

We are fortunate because we have what is called the Delta breeze. Whole house fans are really catching on here because we do have the right climate for it.

As for the outside temp. I can tell by opening a door or a window if it's cooler outside. I also keep a webpage open to one of the local news stations and just look at the weather page if I'm not sure. It works great.
