Wrong belt or wrong routing
Double check it has not fallen off the pulley at either end, happens all of the time.

according to Searspartsdirect.com The manufacturer no longer makes this part, and there's no substitute part
but the OEM original number is Part #140218

The craftsman belts are usually an odd size and need to be exact same size as the discontinued OEM belt.
You should need a 84.5” X 1/2” belt.

Thanks Bert, it appears that it is not in the engine pulley correctly.

If it falls off real easy then the belt keeper might need some tweaking with a 4lb hammer.
It should sit no more than 1/4" away from the pulley

The belt number Srubby came up with codes out as a Gates 6811BR
https://www.gates.com/us/en/ymm/search/part/details?part-number=6811BR
As you see that is 84.25"

All of the after market parts suppliers have a chart of OEM spec belts by length on their web catalogues.
stens list
265-974 an 84.25" drive belt , Bolens 1756725
265-275 an 84.5" drive belt MTD 954-04252
