I'm working on a rototiller a friend got at auction. It ran fine at first, but quit, and can't be restarted. It pops out of the carburetor, but won't really fire. We suspect fuel inlet needs cleaning, but the carburetor is mounted directly to the top of the tank. I haven't seen that design. Anything I should know before I start into it?

yes. it takes 3 things to make a gasoline engine run. Always figure which one is missing before you dive in deeper. Guessing is not a good reason to tear something apart.

We need the numbers off of the engine as well. The manufacturer only made the chassis but not the engine.

Yesterday afternoon I took off shields and cleaned up the block to find an engine number, but couldn't find one. All I have is "5 HP Briggs." The carburetor sits right on top of the gas tank. I have no experience with such a design, and can't see how gas is pulled into the carburetor. Here's a carburetor on eBay that seems to be of this type.

The numbers should be stamped into the side or top of the pull start fan shroud. Don't order anything until we can get the engine numbers figured out. There were quite a few different 5HP versions of this engine made.

Can you attach a couple of pictures of what you are dealing with? It would help us help you. A couple of feet away is ideal usually.

And to separate the carb from the cylinder you will need a long torx bit. T30 if I remember correctly or you have to remove the muffler.

And tanks tend to rust out and they are not available.
