I picked up a '83 7270 with the blade clutch, a F engine for parts, and a complete bricktop engine recently. The 7270 was missing several parts, and controls for the clutch mechanism. I swapped engine plates/muffler with the parts engine, and converted it to a standard mower. The crankshaft on BBC powered mowers has no taper, and is tapped on the end. An allen head bolt holds the blade on. I had to enlarge the hole on the blade adapter so it would be flush with the crank for a balanced blade after the allen bolt was tightened. After that, it was time to go thru the carb, and clean everything. Then the starter recoil needed some attention, and a new rope was wound. The primer bulb and ignition switch mount on the upper handle of this mower. The original key switch was long gone, so a wal-mart special toggle switch was wired in. The coil tested good. I cleaned out the tank and poured some fresh gas in. After adjusting the air/fuel needle, the old green machine roared to life, and ran smooth as butter
Anyway, just wanted to share my latest LB venture. I love working on these old machines. Best mowers ever made by far. I just wish they had put better paint on them in the 80-90's. Hope everyone had a merry Christmas.

I have a model 7231 that I got last September. It's one of my parts mowers but it's pretty good as those go.

The starter is messed up and was given to me as a bag of parts. :laughing:

So is the blade clutch -- I haven't really looked at it but it's wired in the "engaged" position.

On the plus side, the mower looks like it doesn't have all that many hours on it and the wheels in particular look good -- I have plans for those. I'll bet the engine's good too -- compression feels good.

The most peculiar thing about the 7231 is that the primer bulb is mounted on the handle -- like your 7270. That's strange. :confused2:

Yeah, the concept of the primer and ign switch on the handle is ok, but doesn't make the most sense when you still have to start it at the engine? I'm sure it works great on ele start models. Oh well...

My reaction to that design is that (a) it makes the handle much more difficult to remove; and (b) all the extra linkage [wire and tube] between the handle and the engine is more stuff that can cause a problem.

BTW, thanks for describing the difference in the engine shaft between the 7270 and earlier LB models. That kind of factoid may come in handy sometime. :thumbsup:

Got it completed today. With some cleaning, and paint it looks pretty good for a 28 year old haha. Happy new year!

Thank you. It looks better in the pics than actual, but it's an improvement from when I got it.

Those blade-brake-clutch (BBC) models have a heavier cast Zinc flywheel so there is enough inertia to start without the blade engaged. If for some reason you substitute a non-BBC flywheel, the engine probably wouldn't start without the blade engaged. Just a curious fact.
