5.5 hp briggs lawnmower, idles to fast

i got this used lawnmower, was filthy ,had rats nest in it, i put gas in it it ran ok,, i took it apart cleaned all rats nest out, cleaned gas tank out, new lines gas,air filter cleaned , put it back together started up first pull, but now it idles so fast i think the mototr will blow so i shut it off any ideas??

It may be just that you have a nonadjustable carb. They only run at one speed. Also, if you have a throttle control on the handle, it may need some adjustment there.

Sounds like the throttle shaft stuck, or either the governor/ linkage in a bind. Try turning the throttle shaft by hand, but don't force it. If it's stiff or stuck, put some lube on it and gently move it back and forth till it frees up. Should move free and the spring pull it back. I'd give the carb a good cleaning as well.
