42" Yard Machine extension spring

Hello,

I have a older MTD Yard Machine 42". The extension spring that attaches to the lifting shaft and one of two holes (if it even hooks there) in the upper frame. The spring when hooked at one end is abouta good 6" inches away from hooking in one of the two. One is a little closer but only by 3 inches. One hole on upper frame is larger. My question is which hole and is the install just a stretch it and hook it or its there a way to rotate the lifting shaft back to a closer point to hook the spring.

Mower: MTD Yard Machine 17.5 HP 7 Speed 42"
MDL: 13AD678G300

Thank you

The deck lift assist spring is a bugger to go on as it has to support a lot of weight.

The tool is a length of rod or heavy wire with a hook on one end and a handle on the other.
Sit behind the mower on foot on each wheel, hook the spring and pull back.

If it is the deck lift spring, be careful as it will bite you if not carefull. Like Bert said, use a tool. one that is easier is a piece of rope to pull the spring back. it will actually hook onto a hook on the transaxle on the left side bottom. if it is not there, it fell off when the spring came off.
pull up a parts list (you will need the serial number) and verify the spring. it will show where it hooks (at least the vicinity). MTD likes springs as they use them everywhere.
