I have a 21 hp vanguard horizontal shaft motor on a terramite. The rod came thru the block. Where is the best (cheapest) place to purchase parts......Short Block, Block case, etc.....I am leaning toward just putting new casing with all parts that are good in it. If not...I am looking at doing a short block exchange. Any good place to buy these parts? Thx.....I am a newbie here....But I will be looking in from time to time.......Looks like a great place for supportand experience. Thx for any and all replies.

Get the model, type, and code numbers from your engine. I strongly recommend that you buy a new Vanguard and it probably will be a 23 HP as 21 HP models are not available to any great extent. A 21 HP Vanguard is a 23 HP with less fuel flow from a smaller carb.
Do an online search at sites like Small Engine Warehouse, Tulsa Engine Warehouse. The last Briggs that I bought last March came from Equipatron.com.
But most important is that you know the type number and the dimensions of the crankshaft on your engine. Crank diameter, length which is measured from the flat surface where accessories are mounted, and the crank configuration such as 1/4" keyed or different.

Just looking at the parts manual for your engine and there are six different stators and seven different voltage regulators!! Two flywheels are shown also, one has a ring gear for electric start and the other with no ring gear for manual start.

Thx....I called briggs and stratton... They gave me part #s. I hope I got the right flywheel. I am still looking for a stator (alternator) It is the 10 amp (or so they say) part # 696468. Any help with that would be appreciated. The flywheel I ordered is part # 809236.. It does show 2 flywheels and about 4-5 stators. Grrrr. I hope I get it right. Thx again.

If you downloaded the parts manual you know that you need to be specific in your parts search and part numbers. I think that the stator that you are looking for is P/N 696458.
