Hello,

PROBLEM: I have a 2007 John Deere X520 mower with a liquid cooled Kawasaki gas engine at around 400 hours. Recently the engine started completely shutting down while mowing. It will run strong at normal power for a couple of minutes and then just stop. it takes a couple of minutes or so to get it started and running smoothly at which time it will mow for several minutes and shut down and the cycle continues. When restarting it goes through a short period where the engine cycles between high rpm's and low rpm's. Eventually it will maintain higher rpm's and run smooth until the next time the engine cuts off. It will run for quite a while longer without the mower engaged but eventually will stop as well.

WHAT I'VE DONE: It was time to do normal maintenance so I did the following:
- Changed Oil and Oil Filter
- Changed both spark plugs
- Changed Fuel Filter
- Changed Air Cleaner
This did not take are of the problem.

WHAT I DID NEXT:
- I removed and completely cleaned the carb and reinstalled.
This did not take care of the problem.

NEXT:
- I drained almost all the gas from the tank. Added a fuel system cleaner and stabilizer and refilled the tank
This did not take care of the problem.

NEXT:
- Checked the fuel lines between the gas tank and carb, including the fuel pump. Fuel is moving well and there are no cracks.
- Checked the gas cap to verify air was venting.
This did not take care of the problem.

NEXT:
- For kicks I removed the deck, sharpened the blades and completely cleaned and lubricated the deck.

I don't know what else to do.
Is there a sensor that can be causing the problem?
Is there something I'm missing?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

First check all wiring & connections by hand ensuring all is tight & secure. A loose ground wire from engine to chassis may be problem.

You can go mad, it won't help but the medication will ease the pain

Get an inline spark tester install it where it can be easily seen and when the engine starts to pay up have a look at it.
If the unit is flashing while the engine is not firing then your problem is in the fuel system and visa versa.

Do that and we will take it from there.

when it starts bogging down or shuts off, check for spark on both clyinders- those coil packs will just go bad. Ive had it happen before too, when one is starting to go out that as it got hot, the spark quit, or acted intermit and I was chasing this problem and that problem vs this and that, when that is all it was. Hopefully that will work?
