Older Craftsman LT1000 has been running good, but suddenly just spins on start.
What is the best way to proceed?

I have thought about a new engine or rebuilding this one.
I have never rebuilt an engine

Thanks in advance

so the starter will turn the engine, but it won't start..... Correct?
It could be a fuel or spark issue.
First take out one or both spark plugs, if you have carburetor cleaner spray it into the plug holes, but one or two short bursts. Or gasoline in the plug holes will work. Just a little bit.
Reinstall the plugs and wires and try to start, if it fires then dies, you have a carburetor/ fuel issue, if it doesn't start, I would say most likely no spark is being produced.
I would order an Inline spark tester, it just plugs into the plug wire and clips on the spark plug, and it lights up when you have spark, depending on which brand you get.

If the this thread is correct then check for piston movement as zero compression would indicate broken rods.

Kat - you could get free loaner compression checker from auto parts store to see if you really do have compression. As mentioned, a spark tester light in under $10.

For the record: I have installed a complete replacement engine into my 2005-made LT1000, and that was pretty easy, and runs better than the original ever did.

Just have someone crank the engine, while holding your finger over the spark plug holes. No compression, get a new mower.
