Wow. Did not realize what a pain it would be to track down parts and how expensive they are. I found a piston, rod on ebay. Just need gaskets . The model is 40h777. Not sure year build. And does this unit use a woodfuff key for the timing gear? I don't see a slot where it would go . Any help appreciated folks . Thanks

Hopefully your date code is after 040108xx as the rod for the the before 040109xx is only available with the crankshaft. Also hope you order the correct size piston as OS might be needed if your are rebuilding the engine.

Crankshaft timing gear does have a woodruff key. Item 377.

Man you are awesome!
I found the piston with rod complete on ebay. Now I need a gasket kit if you have a source that would be great . I don't know anything but model# 40h777
Type # 0171E1
Code# 040421YG
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first rebuild and slowly I'm getting there. Thanks again

Gasket kits ( ex China ) for 40 series are everywhere for around $ 20 to $ 30
Genuine B & S about double that price
Full kit is https://www.partstree.com/parts/briggs-and-stratton-84001915/
Most don't have head bolts included
Down here B & S list it as " currently unavailible "
NLA or out of stock , take your pick .

First according the IPL the kit is PN 694012. Second just note those bolts pictured are not head bolts but are for the oil sump pan (oil pan, closure plate or whatever you wish to call it).

The 694012 covers these engines.

The 84001915 kit for the following engines.

Your choice. The Kit PN Bert does contains head gaskets that have a fire ring which make them a better choice but the kit may not contain all the correct gaskets for your engine. Also if the 84001915 was a supersede kit for the 694012 Briggs would have noted such in the latest price file that I downloaded in late October 2021.
