I have a Craftsman riding mower with an 18.5 Briggs Intek twin. I bought it new about 10 years ago always changed oil and filters motor ran great My grandson was cutting grass and the motor began to over rev The motor still starts right up but you must leave the choke out or it over revs. all the throttle linkage appears to be intact but you cannot move the governor shaft

check for sticking linkages. also check to make sure the screws haven't come out of the throttle butterfly and jamming the throttle, Next make the governor arm hasn't come loose from the governor shaft. If all that checks out then most likely the governor gear has broken and will require removing and disassembling the engine to replace the gear.

I have checked all the above. The shaft cannot be moved so I guess I will attempt to pull the motor and replace the gear If anyone might help in finding Information on how to do this I would greatly appreciate you advise
