While doing some therapeutic mowing with my ZTX 42 today a 1/2" rock came out of somewhere and I would guess the rock, PTO pulley and belt all converged popping off the belt and the rock lodged itself into the pulley.
Not all that uncommon
Now check the belt carefully for cracks that are th same length apart as the circumference of the pulley
Usually this wrecks the belt.

Good idea. After I put the belt back on I did mark a spot and spun the belt 3-4 rounds. Looked okay. I suspect the belt came off immediately. What if I revise odds to 100-1.
All depends on how much of a betting man you are. Also, take a second look at the pulley itself. Make sure there is not damage there. Any damage will cause premature wear and/or belt jumping off.

Not a betting man and that's why the odds were so far off. I did have a look at the pulley when I dislodged the rock. The examinations were done in the field. I'll lift the mower up higher in the shop and have a good look at the belt and pulley with a good light. Good suggestions all. Thanks.
