ok i tried setting the lash with feeler gauge but kept becoming loose or tight after a full rotation. they do not sit the same. top sits in more than bottom. should i pull the head?

so my lawn power shuts off randomly. if i shut the PTO off before the lawn mower fully shuts off it starts right back up and i engage PTO and keep mowing... for about ten seconds then it happens all over again. if im too slow at shutting off PTO it backfires loudly. but all in all it doesn't...
