By "gasket sealer" I am referring to RTV sealer.

OK, I checked the valve lash, and both cylinders needed adjusted. They were tighter than the factory specs call for. Those were all adjusted to .005. The spark plugs were also gapped a hair too big, so those were adjusted, also. I didn't start it yet because the gasket sealer needs to set up.

I know my tractor's lights won't work if one of the safety switches isn't grounded. There's no power to the ignition switch, and therefore no power to the lights.

My tractor was doing the same thing. Drilled a small hole in the gas cap, which solved the problem immediately.

Could the solenoid be bad, or one of the safety switches be bad?

From what I've seen, I wouldn't park one of those in my garage, let alone in a repair shop. If it catches fire, the intensity of the burn creates such a problem to extinguish. It would more than likely burn everything inside before it could be put out. I've seen both the mowers and the vehicles...
