Briggs & Stratton Opposed Twin Knocking?

Hey everyone! Got questions about my old opposed twin Briggs again. Long story short, I work at a shop, last year someone dropped off a half-disassembled opposed for scrap. I took it home, tore it all the way apart, cleaned up insides, honed, re-ringed, re-sealed, checked valve clearances (were...

Briggs & Stratton Opposed Twin Seems to Have Slow Governor Response...

Hey everyone! I have a quick question I wanted to get some opinions on, regarding an old opposed twin cylinder Briggs. I rebuilt it earlier this year after finding it discarded with the cylinder heads off. I tore it all the way down, cleaned everything, honed cylinders, re-ringed and re-sealed...

Needle & Seat - How Swollen is Too Swollen?

Good evening everyone! I just wanted to get y'alls opinions on Needle & Seat Valves, and when they must be replaced. On smaller Briggs & Stratton/Tecumseh Engines, I've often the Seat is a Rubber Insert and the Needle is Metal, as opposed to most larger engines and Hondas where the seat is brass...

Kohler XT675 Push Mower Engine Auto Choke

Hello everyone! I'm working on a Toro Mower with a Kohler Engine on it for a neighbor. He brought it to me because it wouldn't start. I flushed his water-contaminated gas out and cleaned carb/main jet/emulsion tube. Started right up first pull with some new gas in it... but after a minute it...

    Opposed Twin Restoration Project

Hello everyone! I haven't posted here for a while. Back last spring I restored my Troy-Bilt Bronco Tractor and posted a bit about it here. I ended up getting a job as a tech at a local mower shop which I've had for the past 8 months. Between my experiences at the shop and working on my own...

Troy-Bilt Bronco Lawn Tractor Transmission Squeaky, Hot.

Hello Everyone! I'm making another post on the old Troy-Bilt Bronco Lawn Tractor I acquired earlier this year, saved from the scrap. It's a 13aj609g766 2005 mode. At first I was having drive belt issues, slipping, etc. I believe I have fixed it, everything's been incident free for a while. I...

Brakes Won't Adjust Properly - Already Un-siezed 'pins' and cleaned linkage.

Hey everyone! I'm still working on this Troy-Bilt Bronco 13aj609g766. I got it free a while back and I've made some posts on it. It's been running pretty good after replacing belts, oil gasket, gapping valves, etc. I had some drive belt troubles where it wasn't pulling hills but I think I sorted...

Lawn Mower Engine Brake Too Tall - Dangerous?

Hey y'all, I'm working on a lawn mower to sell, and I've got a slight problem. I got a mower where the person had hit a stump, and the engine was worn out anyway, so I replaced the motor with a spare 3.5HP engine. It had to be mounted "backwards" like the old school engines with the plug facing...

Is it safe to have an additional hole drilled in the flywheel?

Hey everyone quick question, just need some advice. Long story short, I restore junk mowers to sell. I'm working on one with a sheared key. I used a puller on the flywheel but a bolt broke off in one of the puller holes. So, I drilled a new one closer to the center of the flywheel and pulled it...

    Free Briggs 17.5 I/C mid 2000s

Hey everybody! About a week ago a buddy of mine alerted me to some free equipment out for the trash. There was a lawn tractor and pressure washer. I got the pressure washer and fixed it right away, just a leaky needle and seat. Runs great. Pressure washed my driveway finally. The lawn tractor...

    Mower Belts, Pulleys, and Deck

Hey everyone! I mentioned this in a post a while ago, but it was off topic for the post's original purpose, so I figured I'd make a new post about it. I have a Troy-Bilt Bronco Lawn Tractor that I got free of the street for trash. It just had valves out of adjustment. I fixed that, now the...

Briggs Coughing/Sputtering With No Load? Multiple Engines!

Hey everyone! I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this issue before. It's minor but it's driving me nuts, because I can't figure out what's happening. I have a ton of small engines, mostly Briggs powered, and this season I noticed that several of my L-Head Briggs with the Float Style...

2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco with Automatic Drive and Cruise - Drive problems after extended use

Hello All! Recently picked up a 2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco on the side of the road for free. It had sloppy valves that were making it hard to start. Easy fix! Unfortunately I immediately suspected compression release, which led me to tear apart the entire motor. Had to replace the sump gasket as a...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

Always wondered why there are Briggs 650, 675, 700 series engines that seem identical. They're all 190cc engines with the same carburetors. Why do they have different torque specs? It's annoying when trying to find parts. I guess I can assume parts are compatible. Does anyone know why this is?

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Hello all! I am working on a mower for one of my neighbors, that can't get it started. I took it back to my garage and started looking it over. Something is a bit off of it. It's a 650 series briggs 190cc L head. The pull rope does not have as much length as I would expect, and there's a plastic...

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

Hey everyone! I live in Matthews, NC and we just got hit with an F1 tornado. Power has been, as such, knocked out. It isn’t expected to be restored for at least 2 days. In the mean time I cranked up my old Coleman generator, it’s a small one just enough to run a fridge and charge some devices...
