Winter storage tip for your Battery

Thought I would open this thread back up and report my experience over the winter. First post was at the end of October and now we are in the middle of March. So call it 4-1/2 months since installation. Call it 4 months my Exmark Series E with the 708 V-twin has been in storage. When I put the...

This is true. Your "connecting rod" has become very dis-connected. It's past "separated". It's now fully "divorced". :giggle:

    Scag Freedom Z 48 won't start

    >> Even with the key OFF some electrical power is always allowed to flow. The only way to stop the battery "discharge" during long winter storage is to TOTALLY disconnect one of the terminals from the battery. You can physically remove the terminal, OR you can get one of those $9 disconnect...

Gas, fire, or compression. One of those 3 is missing. >> The ethanol fuel is so very, very bad that 98% of the winter storage issues revolve around gummed up carbs. So mechanics will immediately ask about the fuel. That's why the questioning so far has been focused there. >> If there was ANY...

    >> Diodes are nothing but one-way gates for electricity. So with a battery powered Ohm meter you should get a reading with the probes on the input and output leads. When you reverse the position of the 2 probes there should be no reading. The diode will need to be unplugged from the other...

Best 2 cycle oil, and why

If you are a home owner, then I'd buy any good synthetic 2-stroke oil from any named shop (Tractor Supply, Lowes, HD, Ace Hdwr, etc. ). If you are a pro and you need the ultimate, then I would buy Valvoline. Valvoline is a name you can trust. They don't do anything but make great oil. They are...

2 huge holes in your logic... ► Your root assumption is that float needles and seats are perfect and infallible. ► You are also forgetting about GRAVITY, which is on the job 24/7/365. As it has been since it was first discovered in 1679. PS. I'm fairly sure Newton discovered gravity in 1679...

    leak

Anytime the fuel tank is above the carb, gravity can help force fuel (or in this case fuel "mix") to flow into the engine. This is often assisted by a tiny piece of trash stuck in the carb's float valve. You should 1) add a manual fuel ON/OFF valve between the carb and fuel tank, and then 2)...

    Husqvarna yth2148 charging problems.

Above is very good advice. To continue... Batteries can easily die from several very "simple looking" causes... > Batteries which stay in an uncharged condition can easily "sulfate", which is a chemical reaction that inhibits the electron flow in one of more cells. If the battery case is...

    Gas coming out of muffler

I add one when needed to help prevent this problem. As long as the fuel tank is mounted above the carb, old man gravity will make sure you have this problem. ► You need a manual fuel shut-off valve and a filter.

Your smallest jet in the carb is blocked. The small jet is used with starting, idle, and acceleration. I used the same tip on a mower that was in my BIL's junk pile. 15 min later and it's humming away in the side yard. It's going on CraigsList at the first sign of "green stuff" in the yard. This winter has gone by so slowly that I forgot what you call that "green stuff".

    Carb problems with B/S engines

If the motor runs, but surges, then you have cleaned the larger Main Jet, but most likely missed a tiny Idle/Accelerate Jet. And when I say "tiny" I mean the hole is maybe on the order of 0.005 to 0.008 inch for a small walk-behind mower engine. Too small to clean with a fine sewing needle. And...

    engine starts and dies

It could be either an electrical safety switch kicking in (low oil, no driver in the seat, not in neutral, etc) or limited fuel. In my mind, lifting is not the issue. Having a setup that insures the jack will not pop-out while you're working under the equipment is the most important thing. Last week I saw weld-on equipment jacks at Tractor Supply. I stopped because they looked exactly like the jack that came with my...

    Snapper Hi Vac compression question

Sometimes on an engine that has sat for a look long while, the cast iron rings start to stick inside the piston. Using starter fluid, if you can simply get the engine to run long enough to get warm/hot and circulate some fresh 5W30 or 10W30 motor oil, then the rings will pop free and you won't...

    SD Raptor hydraulic leak

The area around the fan is "sweating", which I consider normal. "Leaking" on the other hand would be coming from something below the fluid level. It has to be down low to leak that kind of volume. So you need to show us photos from the bottom looking up.

There are hand-held testing devices that will scan a shaft end and report the RPM, but most of those are for temporary lab use. There must be someone making a small tach kit that connects to an app on your smart phone. That way you wouldn't need to buy 2 expensive gauges, or bother mounting...

Some things to look for.... • When your deck gets above ~36" it gets really important to have the anti-scalping rollers on the corners of the deck. Exmark lazer advantage series hydro problem.

I am not really familiar with these drives, but it sounds as if the hydraulic pump is somehow loosing its "prime". Fully agree with above. Further... If 4 starters do the same thing, then we can safely assume that it is not the starter. 1) The battery itself is the next most likely item to fail. It's all about the electrical power inside the battery. BUT, is the battery failing to hold a charge (old age)...

Welcome Aboard ! It's all about "skill sets" and they way you develop new skills is to get a project and work on it. With engines, the mantra is: fire, gas & compression. If it don't run, it's got to be one of those 3 issues. When you find it, you can ignore the other 2, which will quickly...

Hello from NC - engine question

I'd have to say, you are correct about ZTMs on hilly yards. They will definitely slide well before a lawn tractor if you need to ride across the slope. And it's very scary when it happens. The lighter ZTMs are really more likely to slide than the big one. Weight is the deciding factor.

    HYDROLOCKED

This is true. Gravity forces the fuel "down hill" and it ends up in the cylinder and then the sump... where it dilutes the engine oil. If you have a fuel ON/OFF valve, then replace it.

Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 18 hp running lean

Old gas will put a varnish coating on parts of the carb interior due to the ethanol. Non-ethanol is a fix too late. Obviously, this "coating" includes the interior of the jets, which get smaller due to the varnish. The smaller jetting orifii then lean out the engine. The best thing is simply...
