    Leaking hydrostatic oil from transmission

Hello, I have an old Honda 215 Masters mower with hydro trans, so it may have a different trans than yours, but the trans has a filler cap/dipstick that does come loose from time to time. I'd check to see if it does have a filler cap and if it's loose. Might save you the hassle of returning...

    1989 Homelite-Jacobsen 20" Mower

Hello, Not a West Bend, but a Briggs and Stratton 2 cycle, same engine used on certain John Deere (also rare) walk behinds. YouTube has some video's of these B&S 2 cycles. The Komatsu Zenoah Venture – In May 1987, Briggs & Stratton entered into an agreement with yet another Japanese company...

    1989 Homelite-Jacobsen 20" Mower

    Briggs 4hp 187cc model 112292 0707 -- rebuild, need advice!

Hello, You probably wouldn't get a lot of power from the flathead Brigs. I'd walk through a rebuild with your son (using stock parts, if needed), then look for a more powerful engine for later. Weren't the "hot" engines for karts a Mac9 (short for McCulloch)? Regards Jeff

    Found a Jacobsen Sign

Yep, had one with the 321 engine, did a real nice job cutting BTW. They called it a turbo-cut. It started on the first pull EVERY time. Regards Jeff

    Found a Jacobsen Sign

Nice! I'm guessing 50's to 60's? Has the old script Jacobsen instead of the new block letter Jacobsen. Don't let the guys from American Pickers see that. Regards Jeff

what the hell have I done wrong

Hello, I'm no expert on diaphragm type carbs, but the main theory is they use a flexible rubber membrane that is "powered" by crankcase pulses (both pressure and vacuum), to pump fuel into the carb where is is metered in the appropriate amounts. It's possible your carb may need rebuilding...

what the hell have I done wrong

Hello, Echo (on chainsaws at least) doesn't refer to it as a primer bulb, it's know as a purge valve, I'm guessing it purges air from the carb, totally different than a float type carb, where it does force gas into the venturi. Regards Jeff

My grass is suffering, please help!

Hello, I'd talk to a local landscaping supply (I'm talking a mom and pop shop, not Lowes or Home Depot). They will be familiar with the type of grass grown in your area and would give you tips on how to successfully grow it. Regards Jeff

    Daihatsu DM950G ID

Hello, Check Partstree for Cub Cadet utility tractors, model 5254. I know Cub Cadet used Daihatsu diesel engines and they may have used a Daihatsu gas engine.5254 L (54AL542-710) - Cub Cadet Compact Tractor I saw a carb on one model that was a two barrel design. Regards Jeff

    JCPENNEY lawnmower

Hello, Hmmm. What is the model number of the mower? I've never seen a Briggs engine on an older Lawn-Boy until now. It could be legit, or somebody may have slapped a newer (Classic Briggs) engine on an older deck. The 2 cycle JC Penny mower had it's name on the plastic shroud.

Recommend a zero-turn self-propelled 21" electric walkbehind? (gas if necessary)

FWIW, most small gas engines don't use pressure oil lube and aren't designed for operating them at much of an angle (they'll starve for oil and have a shortened life). Kawasaki does make a small gas engine that does use an oil pressure system. Jeff

Brand new HRX217 takes multiple pulls to start when cold. Is this normal?

Hello, Remove the air cleaner and verify the choke is closing completely (cold) when you move the throttle lever to the choke position. If it does, and you still experience hard starting, I would back out the idle needle 1/8 to 1/4 turn. I agree a new mower shouldn't require 4 pulls to start...

Recommend a zero-turn self-propelled 21" electric walkbehind? (gas if necessary)

Hello, Looks like you're inquiring about a walk behind mower with front castor wheels, not a zero turn. I don't own one and have never mowed with one, but did find this string on the my tractor forum. One person replied they aren't real good if your yard is hilly. Push mowers with front...

What is the best brand? Weigh in here...

Hello, It's hard to label one mower as best, depending on what you're trying to do with it (mulch, bag, vacuum leaves or just cut). Snappers do have the best vacuum action. Somewhat of a downside to Snappers, was they are heavy, something you're not going to lift it, to put in your trunk to mow...

I need some help with a carburetor

Hello, Small air cooled engines carbs either require a primer bulb, or a choke plate (in some cases both) to start. Honda uses the auto choke system. It's best to replace fuel lines (even though externally it looks ok) when doing any carb work as the inside does break down and the rubber bits...

    Hi from down under

Hello, Yep,,,hard to beat the old 2 stroke engines. Less moving parts. It's not uncommon to find find old Lawn-Boys still running after 50+ years. I find Honda's are the best 4 cycle engines. Keep clean oil in it and the blades sharp and you'll be good to go for a long time. Regards Jeff

    worn out engine?

Hello, It's pretty common for the Duraforce carb to leak at the needle valve causing fuel to pool in the transfer chamber and eventually into the muffler. You could perform a compression check, most of my Duraforce engines pull 105 to 115 PSI. Regards Jeff

    Honda GXV120 rebuild

Hi Chris, I'm guessing you want as tight a clearance in the valve stem to valve guide clearance, Too tight and the valve stem will bind, too loose and oil will escape into the combustion chamber. Your talking tenths here,,,(i.e. .0001") Keep in mind as metal gets hot, it will expand, as long...

    Honda GXV120 rebuild

Hi Chris, Hmmm,,,hard to interpret this chart. I'm guessing for your GXV120 engine the intake should have .15 MM clearance for the intake and .20 MM clearance for the exhaust. Not quite sure if this is the clearance for the valve stem to guide clearance or the amount the valve opens? If the...

    Honda GXV120 rebuild

Hi Chris, Assuming you have a 0-1.00" micrometer, i'd try to find the largest diameter rod that will fit into the valve guides and then mic your valve stems where they come into contact with the valve guides, if > .001" I'd replace the valve guides. Mine were within 1/2 thou or so (i.e...

    Honda GXV120 rebuild

Hi Chris, The exhaust valve on my GXV140 looked similar. I used a Dremel hand grinder with wire wheel to remove most of the carbon and did resurface the valve seat face with the compound on my lathe set to 45 degrees. If you had a pool of oil in the cylinder, I would suspect it's leaking past...

    Honda GXV120 rebuild

Standard piston diameter measured at the lower edge of the skirt and 90 degrees from piston pin...

WHAT TYPE OF MOWER DO YOU USE AS YOUR MAIN MOWER?

Hello, I use a Kubota BX2230 for most of my lawn (1 acres), then with a Honda HR215 Masters mower or Lawn-Boy 2 stroke to trim around the house and in areas the Kubota can't go. You'r doctor will tell you to sell the riding mower and use a walk behind,,,LOL. Regards Jeff

    Briggs L-head; what an engine!

Hello, I remember old timers back when I was a kid, saying they don't make things like they used to. Now that I'm an old fart, I'm saying the same thing,,,lol. The engine would be even better if it was one of the old cast iron type, not the "Kool Bore" with aluminum cylinder with no steel...

which weedeater engine has the output shaft facing to righthand side?

Hi, To get the pull start on the left and clockwise rotation,(on the PTO side) you're looking for, I'd say a chainsaw would be your best bet. Just be aware some chainsaws have the coil mounted in the housing (I.E. Poulin Wild Thing), not on the engine, so you'd have to use the whole housing...

    Backfiring resolution

Hi Guys, My 4hp Tecumseh (on a Troy-Bilt Junior rototiller) backfired when running at full speed and real bad when the throttle was pulled back to idle. After searching the web for a cause of backfiring on small air cooled engines, I couldn't find a definitive reason why. I removed the head...

    Oil leak on GXV140

Hi Guys, I noticed an oil leak started at the end of this years mowing season. I searched this Honda forum, but only found a couple related posts. Oil is all over the BBC system, which leads me to think the lower crankshaft seal is bad, however when the mower was tilted on it's side, oil...

    Troy-Bilt Junior tiller

Hello, How much motor oil does the Troy-bilt junior tiller take? It has the 4.0 Tecumseh (HS40-55580L) engine. The plastic fill port plug has no dipstick, so I have no way of knowing how much oil is in it. Also looks like there are drain plugs on both sides of the engine. Regards Jeff
