I've found that theres often a liner inside the cap that can be pried out and the vent hole cleaned out.

I believe that you have a wire that's shorted. Carefully trace eack of the wires coming off the ignition switch and look for fraying are pinching. I'd also suspect a shorted ignition switch. (They've been known to short internally).

May have hit an obstacle and sheared the timing pin (jumped time). Have a look at the top of the flywheel and see if the shear pin is lined up with the slot.
