Oil drain assembly question - trying to fix leak

The cap is supposed to have an O-ring seal tucked up inside that seals it to the fill tube. If it is cracked or missing, you need a new dipstick.

    Caught fire now smoking

Hello J., In reference to the pushrods, they look normal. Everything I am reading points to a defective carburetor leaking fuel into the crankcase. This problem will create lots of smoke and spitting over-thinned oil out of the exhaust. Stop digging around in the motor "looking for a problem"...

    Caught fire now smoking

You don't try to run these engines with the cover off. With the valve/rocker cover off, it will quickly sling all the oil out of the engine. The cover keeps the oil in. This is the concept with most small engines with "splash" lubrication. Even the ones with oil pumps do this.

Good! To get the best performance, adjust the screw with the throttle on high. slowly adjust the mixture screw to get the best rpm out of the engine. To go one step further, move the throttle level with your finger a little farther and see if the mixture is still good or needs to be dialed in...

As far as I know, the plate has to be purchased. If it bent a push rod a valve guide coming up out of the head is a real possibility. He needs to push down on the valves and make sure they can open. Otherwise, he is looking at replacing the head.

    Caught fire now smoking

Hello Newbie: We need the numbers that are stamped into the valve rocker cover to properly reference what engine you have. What color is the smoke? Black is excess fuel, blue/white is oil usually. Sounds like the engine fan cover needs to be removed and the engine cylinder cooling fins need a...

Electrical concern T150 - real stumper

The fuse holder looks like it was around a leaking (gassing) battery for a while. Corrosion in connectors builds resistance and resistance build heat, that is why the plastic of the fuse melted. I hope the new one you put in was a heavy gauge wire with a 20A fuse. As for the fuel solenoid, I...

    Missing spring

Hello R., This is what makes working on small engine equipment so tricky even for professionals. Propane conversion for my Storm Responder 5500-watt generator

Hello G., Years of military training and "country life" in general has taught me to prepare by using 2 to 3 levels of "backup". Fortunately, we still have non-ethanol fuel and E-10 in my area, but E-15 is gradually being implemented. E-15 is just more trouble, and I think even the fuel...

Propane conversion for my Storm Responder 5500-watt generator

Hello G., With my 5500 Watt storm responder I am using gasoline for starting and warmup, then I turn the gas fuel valve off and let it run until it sputters out of gas. Has it sputters near shutting down, I open the valve on the 20lb. propane tank and the engine keeps on going. It's a smooth...

Hello M., We need the product label information off of the chassis to know how your machine is built. I don't recommend experimenting with belt sizes because that seldom works. The most common cause for a deck belt to jump of is if the belt pulley guides have been bent back or moved out of...

Propane conversion for my Storm Responder 5500-watt generator

Hello R, I missed your reply back in February and got sidetracked due to medical issues. The difference is that gasoline will burn cooler and eventually carbon foul the sparkplug. Propane on the other hand burns too hot during combustion and will create piston damage. Propane can still foul...

Kohler SV-601 - Fresh soot around crankcase closure plate

Hello H., "Bucket Motor" is a slang term that I have heard quite a few people use to refer to this engine design with a top cover plate. Metaphorically, all the parts were dumped into a bucket, and the lid was put on. These engines do eventually leak around the top seam from metal expansion...

Take the muffler off and get it red hot with a torch to burn out the slag carbon buildup. I have recovered many 2-stroke engines by doing this. If exhaust cannot get out, fresh air cannot get in for the carburetor to pull in fuel efficiently.

Suddenly stopped, fuel leaking from bottom part of carburetor

Pull the carburetor and remove the bowl. Then remove the float and needle to check for debris in the needle and seat area. Often times, fuel filter do not catch fine particles, and they get pinned between the needle and seat. This creates a flooding condition and will stall the motor.

Hello C., (More thoughts) From my automotive training many years ago, one thing that has stuck with me is the ideal fuel to air ratio number of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel.
