if it is a plastic manifold, you may have a warp between it and the carb, allowing just enough air in that the idle mixture is affected, or it may be debris in the idle jet.

Very possible - in which case the pieces got between the head and piston. That has the same effect including a damaged rod. The point is there is no happy ending here with a loose wire or dirt in the carb. Engine comes apart and if any pieces hit the cylinders, cam ect, they are toast too.

as others said - is it having trouble spinning, or trouble running even though it spins freely. If the valves are gapped looser than spec, the compression release will be less effective.
