What he said. You're neutral knobs may have not been tight enough. Definitely check the drive belt too. If it comes off, it can be difficult to spot (and put back on).

I have just over 2 acres and have to mow about 1-1/3 of it. I bought a 48" Exmark and think it's the perfect size. The Kubota you mentioned seems like overkill for 1/3 of an acre.

I'd start with what's sold in your son's area. Narrow it down from there. Having the dealer nearby can be pretty handy.

Not all safety switches are bad to bypass. My old Cub 2165 has a switch that shut the PTO off whenever you went into reverse. I HAD to stop that crap.
