8HP Briggs Governor Shaft Leak

It is held in by fiction and is pressed in place. I never seen move on it own other than wear out.

491956, BTW it is NLA. If you damage it then it takes a machine shop to make one using the old one as a guide.

Do you know what that hole looks like inside of the crankcase? Is that brushing in a blind hole or is it through to the inside of the engine? Trying to figure out what the best nest move is here. It doesn’t seem to want to move from the outside. Maybe I need to pull the bottom cover off the engine and have a look from the inside? As far as worn out, how tight is the governor shaft supposed to fit the bushing? It does wiggle around a bit.

The bushing goes the end of the goes to the end of the governor shaft and supports the full length of the shaft before the bend or angle depend shaft style. Governor shaft is just a hair under 1/4" [.250"]. I had ream them to 1/4" so there is a very minimum side play. Now the SM has as .242 but some shafts are larger.

Just note you have the latest style that is not covered in the service manual as it has a beefier mounting area so a seal could be added.

From the SM showing how bushing sticks out in the crankcase. Mounting instructions are before the seal was introduced.

From what StarTech posted, it looks like the bushing is supposed to come out about 1/16. How does that compare to what you see? Could you fit a gasket, if the seal is too thick? From your pic, there isn't much between the bushing and the hole for the clip.

The bushing is sticking out approximately 1/16" like the diagram is showing. The manual seems to be saying to press the bushing into the crankcase to remove it. I can't seem to get this to do that, it looks like if I hit it too much it's going to start peening the outside of the bushing over. The cotter pin is basically touching the bushing, I didn't try putting a gasket between it and the bushing but I don't see there being space for one. I also had the thought of an O-ring, but I don't see that fitting either. If I'm reading the diagram correctly it's saying that washer fig.2 should go behind the cotter pin. When I disassembled this the washer was in front of the cotter pin and also is wider than the gap between the bushing and cotter pin.

As of right now I put it back together how I disassembled it. Will run it a little bit and see just how much it leaks, I have a feeling in enough time the oil soaked belt will be a problem again.

It sounds to me like it's pressed in from the outside, so may need to be pressed out from the inside. Looking back at the instructions, it says to ream the bushing. Maybe that's what makes room for the seal? What does the seal look like?
