It's not the blade. I recently sharpened and retorqued the blade to the recommended 60 ft. lbs.

Oil used is Penzoil SAE 30. If I remember correctly, there is no stipulation in Toro manual regarding deterent or non-detergent. The knock is audible only under load and gets louder under heavy load. Otherwise its a good running lawn mower. I keep the blade sharpended and it does a great job...

I know that it's not valve noise because it's a knock, not a tap. I am using 20 ounces of SAE 30 oil as per the Toro instruction manual.

I have a Toro 20330 22" rotary mower with a B&S engine. It really runs nice except that under certain load conditions, I hear what sounds like a rod knock. It's been going on for a while and wonder if substituting SAE 40 oil for the 30 thats in there will quiet things down.

Yeah, I thought the solution was going to be more technical than bending the bracket but what works, works!!! :)

I found this Youtube video that shows the governor spring anchor bracket being bent in a direction to either increase or decrease governor spring tension. Whether this is the way Briggs & Stratton recommends, I don't know. But it takes care of the problem.

OK thanks a lot. I see the engine speed should be 2900 +/- 100 RPM. I guess I need to find a photo electric tach.

I friend gave me a very nice Toro 20330 recycler mower with B&S 190cc engine. For some reason, the engine speed seems quite high. I cleaned the carb with carb cleaner and everything seems to move freely. I have another identical mower and the engine runs at a more moderate and reasonable RPM...

Yes, carburetor cleaner. It's quite dusty where I am and I find that the choke butterfly will tend to hang up making starting difficult. Sorry I won't be on the snowblower forum. I live in Hawaii :)
