Ugh...resurfaced my center section and it works as it should now....gotta love amazon. EDIT: Mowed entire yard with full strength on this motor. Before resurfacing it was struggling to climb a mild 5-10 degree grade by the end of mowing. See how long it will last.

Definitely a difference in the center where the fluid passages are located. Right is the replacement part-left original..

Tried both and the clunking remains....ugh. Sounds like this engine is on it's last leg.

Thanks for the ideas. I think I will remove the deck and clutch to see if that eliminates the "clunking". It does have the governor controlled idle. The phone was recording just under the carb. and near the governor. Phone was not being moved around until the very end when I moved the phone...

So it was the spring loaded grey connector. The spring has pushed through on the inside plastic shorting the seat switch connection wires. This circuit should be open with a rider in the seat.

Thanks for the reply. I cross-connected the pigtail to the seat switch wires with a test wire and the mower still dies every time when I release the brake pedal.

Cranks, starts and idles fine, but as soon as I release the brake the engine dies instantly. I checked seat safety switch which is normally closed-when no rider is on the mower and open when a rider is sitting on the mower. I am looking into the interlock switch now, but not 100% sure on how...

OK, I found out what happened when I put the new belt on 3 times. lol The bolt that goes through the clutching idle pulley and the frame came loose resulting in pulley sag. Due to the sag the belt was riding too low on the stationary idler causing the belt to jump off. I did fail to to put the...

Pulled deck to see...it is obvious my mistake :( and both idlers are fine.

When mowing I can smell slight burning rubber and the brake pedal bounces. This drive belt was replaced about two years ago and is now mostly shredded. Mower is the 917.271022. Any ideas? Maybe an idler pulley? Thanks for help/suggestions.
