    Is my starter bad?

I would agree with Star, bad battery. An internal shift solenoid needs a minimum of 11VDC to kick in and hold the bendix gear in place. Other cause would be that the internal solenoid contacts are corroded, which mean taking the starter apart.

Star, would you share where you found that part number? I looked for over 40 minutes and could not find the number for the older carb. Thank you.

    drive pulley

That’s not the full model number. I also see you’ve posted three threads about the same issue, that’s a NO NO. If your model number is 917276683. I think think the part number is 586478501. Recheck your model number.

    unusual pulley

I’m assuming you are referring to the drive pulley. We are going to need the model and serial numbers, normally located under the seat. The experienced techs on this forum hate making guesses

    Starting Issue

Sounds like you have an intermittent short in a component or wiring harness. This is going to take some patient electrical troubleshooting with both a VOM and test light. If you feel that you can do this, please provide us with the model and serial numbers and we will try to find you an...

Recoil Starter Part Number Identification Problem

    Changed my mind

Guess you’ve never read my previous replies to what is the best push mower to purchase. I used to say that even the cost of the Toro Super Recycler was high, it was a 20 year mower and worth paying the higher price. I no longer can say that. Honda used to make a quality mower, but they have...

    Changed my mind

While we were talking the one thing that really surprised me was when the owner said that Toro support was very poor on these mowers. I started dealing with Toro in 1980 and never really had any problem dealing with them, but nonsupport in my mind means I can no longer recommend them. They...

    Changed my mind

To all who have followed this forum for a long time, you will know that I have been a strong supporter of the Toro 21” Super Recycler cast deck mower. I am now changing my mind and can no longer do so. Over the Labor Day weekend I went to the local county fair and was talking to the owner of...

    Husqvarna 128LD

What gave me the impression you thought it was a piece of junk??? 1. My cheap neighbor 2. Bought at a pawn shop for $20 3. Condition questionable 4. Leaks fuel 5. Won’t crank, hydro lock, piston or rod seized, 6. No cover, no filter 7. Now you add that all you’ve done is just pulled...

Boy you’re making a lot of fuss on a piece of equipment that’s leaking fuel!!! Maybe if you would spend a little time telling us where it’s leaking and what you’ve done to solve the problem we might be able to help you out. Is it leaking at the tank? Is the crankcase filling with fuel? Is...

Best advice I can give you is to take the engine numbers to a Scag dealer and see if they can back check which models use that engine. Or contact Scag directly.

Buying a forever lawnmower. Lawnmower buying advice.

I’ve been servicing mowers for 50 years and Craftsman is a mower I would never recommend. A steel deck mower will never last 20 years, unless it spends 80% of its life in the shed. Craftsman parts are getting to be harder to get, as you don’t know who is manufacturing the mowers, Husqvarna and...

    Belt Life

All depends what the type of use, keeping the deck top and bottom clean, checking all pulleys, etc. Most manufacturers recommend changing every three to five years. At eight years old I would recommend changing yours.

Verify that the guide has moved before replacing the head. As I stated the guide does protrude above the head base. A good repair shop should be able to help you.

Recoil Starter Part Number Identification Problem

Two different starters were used on that model engine, depending on the manufacturing date. I suggest you do one of two things. Go to an authorized Briggs service dealer and have them contact their distributor for the correct part number or contact Briggs directly through their website. Make...

Sgkent, that is the vent as Star stated, not fuel inlet. Fuel will also leak out the fuel vent if the gasket between the carb body and base is compromised.

    Oil filter

Working in a trade school I had access to many different types of materials. Metal formed very easily, but the environment of a shop got banged around leaving openings around the filter which would leak. Plastic solved that problem and as I said reduced the number of times hands and wrist were...

    Oil filter

Metal was a material I tried, but found that it would not hold its form. Easily distorted especially the area around the filter. Plus it had sharp corners and edges, which caused an increase in the bandaid supply. I forgot to add that once you size the plastic around the filter, heat the...

    Oil filter

Back when I was teaching, ran into this problem on a wide variety of engines. Made about a half dozen what I call oil troughs. Here’s what I had my students do. Get a piece of polyethylene plastic about 6” X 8”X1/8”. Get a new or cleaned up used filter you need a solution for, two work...
