You need to have the spring link and the rod link in the right holes without being twisted. See Photo. No if it still happens where it will not stay running or hard to start, your new carb got dirty somehow. Change the spark plug too, NGK or Champion.

You did the right thing, buy a new carb for $28 and be done with it, many more years of reliability without the problems.

If it pulls back on your hand, the timing is off. Why did you adjust the valves? If you did not hit a stump or anything previous then retrace your steps and double check the timing marks. Stick with parts for your exact motor. There can be a lot of rotation where the valves do not move. You...

Take the fuel line off the carb and turn the engine over, if gas comes out of the pump it is working, if not, bad pump. If it works, then it makes sense it should feed the carb.

New carb, check, empty tank and dry it out before new gas put in? check or no check? If not you may have bad gas in your new carb. Also make sure your linkage is perfect.
