if all the pulleys and belts are ok check to make sure the guides are still intact on the underside of the deck. if not the grass will not come out and get bound up under the deck causing a stall. there is a nice picture of the underside of the deck in the sales brochure listed on eBay.

check the anti backfire solenoid in the carb and make sure it moves out with key on and do a compression test.
