    Gas Powered Lawn Mower History

1918 produced one of the first Gas powered push or walk behind mower. They were still big and bulky at this point. I understand that this one is water cooled. I don't have many details about it so far.

    Won't start

Me, I would be using my Multi-meter to trace voltage from battery, switch on to starter to see where the voltage flow is stopping at. Your electrical schematic would be handy to trace that path

    Gas Powered Lawn Mower History

Here is old picture of the the 1902 Ransomes' in action plus a present day picture of a fully restored one. This is said to be the first commercially available gas engine powered riding mower and weighed 1.25 Tons and was 8'-0 Long.

    Gas Powered Lawn Mower History

It appears that the very first hand push mowers go back to the early 1800's and started in England. The very first gas engine powered mower also came from England in 1902. Here is a drawing of that machine plus a little background info: "Around 1900, one of the best known English machines was...

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

So that is why it's being recommended just to pull the deck and change the bearings in place-------saves dealing with a broken Mandrel bolt or having to replace the whole Mandrel assmebly?

    Memorial Day

As one that was called up for the draft during Vietnam and rejected because of health reasons. Thank you that did go in my place and I have had this Life of Freedom because of you and to those who paid the ultimate price. I so appreciate your service and sacrifice!!!

    Dad's First Used Dunlap Mower

I thought so myself! It's about as basic as you can get and still be a gas power mower. Instead of having an engine shroud that extended over the cylinder, it just has a cooling wheel with some tilted blades. I've been looking at all sorts of vintage mowers on the net lately and fascinated...

    Dad's First Used Dunlap Mower

I was about 6 years old when he brought this mower home in the mid 50's. Our mower prior to that was a manual(non=powered) push rotary Reel mower. I remember being very much enthused with the Dunlap but I was too young to operate it. I don't recall it being run very much. I think Dad had a hard...

    Maintenance, Oiling your Riding Mower??

That's a new one on me. Graphite powder mixed with a little oil. For non grease fitting lubricating, in the past I have been using 30 SAE oil applied with a oil squirt can. Same oil that goes in the crank case. A little messy I reckon Got a lot of options opened up now. Let me see Hmmmm

    Maintenance, Oiling your Riding Mower??

The WD-40 Specialist Silicone sounds interesting. I'll have to pickup a can of that and try it. Thanks!

    F725 big white smoke cloud

I don't know if you have completely confirmed you do have gas in your oil? Regarding the smoke bomb effect, I have had that happen when I started mowing and my oil cap was loose. I also have had gas in my oil when I filled my gas tank extra full and somehow my carburetor float valve failed and...

New to forum: need tire advice

Looks llke nobody is jumping on this. I don't know myself? It seems like aggressive type tread patterns would end up tearing up your turf?? You said it hasn't been a problem until this year. So maybe you could change some things around to deal with a temporary situation---like in the real steep...

    Maintenance, Oiling your Riding Mower??

Well I guess it's just something I'm inclined to do and feel better about doing it rather than not. I know some that are a lot more knowledgeable than me that never oil or grease and I can't help but wonder about that. Guess I'll continue since nobody scolded me real bad

    Mower Humor

Well the statement "will mow for food" need to be accompanied by the picture of a Goat to make sense! Regarding fast food, I went to Burger King this week and ordered a to-go from the inside counter. I had a coupon for large size combo and they handed me small drink cups and I had to point out...

    Maintenance, Oiling your Riding Mower??

Sometimes I think I may go overboard on oiling so I wonder if I am the only one?! At least every other mowing or sometimes every mowing task is started by oiling that includes every lever/pedal connection where movement occurs and medal meets medal. This is includes tie rod ends, steering gear...

    What's ya'll Opinion of "Berryman B-12 CHEMTOOL"?

Thanks for all of your comments!!! That's what I wanted to hear from as your experience and opinion regarding this. Well I agree! There is nothing like tearing down a carburetor or whatever is ailing and properly clean/repair to get things working right. I guess where I'm coming from is once I...

    What's ya'll Opinion of "Berryman B-12 CHEMTOOL"?

Regarding Lawn mowers and two cycle chainsaws, weed eaters and etc, I've found if the engine is running rough or just barely running, you can mix a little of this in with the fuel and run it a while and many times it will straighten right out and run normal. It mostly works good for a carburetor...

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

OK Thanks, I might just try doing the bearing change out when the time comes and use this thread as a reference. Other question I have is from past experience in removing the mounting bolts that hold the Mandrel assembly in place usually break off when you try to remove them! For the normal hack...

    Mower deck spindle greasing

Yes, you might need to look under the deck. It's going to follow the least path of resistance. Wherever that might be

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

Thanks, I've read through your explanation several times trying to absorb all the info. Haven't had any experience with different types of bearing seals and how they work. I'm assuming "RS" is rubber sealed and not sure about ZZ or Z type(metal sealed?). Seems like what experience I have had is...

    ruined a blade

Yelp I need to do something different like that. I been driving a big nail in the stump and tie a fluorescent orange surveying ribbon around the nail. Only problem the color fades or grass blocks the view and "Bang!" you nailed it again

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

YELP! When you get to changing the bearings out separately, that's beyond my pay grade>>>>>may need to go off on a week long bearing seminar to do that

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

It appears that this subject is really subjective. I got started on these off brand Mandrels with grease fittings when my old Sears 2000 42" cut when the originals went out. The replacements had a vertical grease fitting in the top of the shaft and was vertical that made them almost impossible...

    Paying Homage to Rabbit

Rabbit was my next door neighbor and the best lawn equipment repairman I've ever known. He recently finished his days work in his shop, ate supper, set in his recliner and passed away. Even though it's been over a month ago, it's just now sinking in he is gone. I am a pretty decent mower...

    Model YTH 18542 Mandrel Assembly

I've had this riding mower since 2019 and after this much use I'm anticipating replacing them even though at this point they seem to be doing ok. From past experiences I never get more than five years out of a Mandrel assembly. So on my last sears mower I replaced those mandrels with ones that...
