Blades should stop but keep going when I go in reverse, CUB CADET. ???

Half way through cutting the lawn, engine starts to spit and sputter, then stops. When I try to start later I have to jump start battery. ??????

Unfortunately I have a LT1045 Cub Cadet, Will explain that later. But for now the problem is the wires that connect to the PTO got hung up and cut. They do not give you any slack. How can it be fixed (without getting a new PTO) Thanks : Have a GREAT week everyone.
