Hi. From what I've read and from my experience it sounds like a "Fuel Starvation" problem. Wouldn't hurt to boil out the carb and make sure the venturi fuel supply holes are cleaned out. I've used twist ties from bread bags and bend a small 90 degree in it and seems to have worked for decades...

Hi and Welcome to the LMF. Those old 5 HP B&S engines are tough but they do get hard to start over the years. Sometimes the diaphragm gets stiff and it won't pump gas. Or the pickup tube screen gets dirty; and it has a choke plate on the carb or a primer bulb. Those bulbs can get cracks in...

Sometimes I've seen governor and throttle linkages and springs get crossed over and cause a runaway situation on start up. It's easy to do if you get the carb off and don't make sure there is free movement. Could also be a throttle shaft binding due to crud.
