It probably has a lot of old oil remaining in it, which would account for the extra ounces.

The spec is 48oz. Did you change the oil filter too? Just run it for a few minutes to let the oil fill up the filter and oil passages, etc. Are you on any kind of incline?

I would do whatever you can to fix it up. I've got an opposed twin from 1985 that's still running good, just needs new rings.

My dads got a JD 6x4 Gas Gator, we took the engine all apart because it was running bad. I think it had low compression so we got a rebuild kit with rings and pistons. The rings had tons of sludge and buildup in them. It has 4K hours on it 😦 lol only kawa could do something like that. Anyway...
