Happens all the time with old motorbikes that have a petcock that gets left on. Many naysayers claim that the float keeps the gas from flowing when off but you (and I) have found out otherwise. Unfortunately few mowers have a shutoff.

My Toro/Briggs was having start and run issues. The bowl was clean but the few bucks spent on a rebuild kit with jet cleared it right up. It's a mystery to me because nothing looked amiss but I'll take the little victories without question.

Seafoam in everything using pump gas. Saved me on many a Spring startup. Before that I always had a problem and I have many seasonal gas powered items to live with. Eight bucks a can is far less than rebuilding kits and time wasted.

Actually not. Our 1 year old dishwasher had a failure and the smoke got out of the wires. So much for big named companies that can't even install wires without them shorting each other out. That's not to mention that repair parts are not a manufacturing priority now.
