Intek 24 hp sheds sump bolts

Hello tractor survivors. My craftsman ytd 4000 24 hp shed its sump bolts this week. Oil mess , rattling and no idle . Found two retaining bolts completely loose and standing on their heads in front of the oil filter (tightening sequence #4, 8). Was able to start them by hand. Then I backed the other 8 off and performed the tightenign sequence in the intek manual. The loosened condition allowed crancase pressure to blow out part of the gasket which inhibited the fuel pump (apparently) so that the engine would not idle. After tightening the beast is happy again. With chagrin I note that craftsman at least placed the sump close enough the to frame to capture the bolts in loosened condition. With that kind of design cunning why not fail safe the fasteners (locktite blue?) to start with? Anyway check them periodically. The engine hold down bolts (4) were still tight.

Yep - I'd be using locktite blue......if they've backed off once through vibration it's a bound to happen again ( clean the bolts off first with acetone - as it breaks through the gunk & dries/evaporates quick to give the locktite a clean surface to bond)

MBTRAC, Problem with my situation is that the female threads are no doubt gunked up so careful prep of the screws now probably does not make sense. But I hear you on the acetone. When I could not find the locktite primer I used brake parts cleaner spray . Seems to work well.

Also the screws have been reused third time and the captive lock washers look really anemic. I guess I should replace the 10 of them. It's a wonder the whole tractor stays together with the buckboard ride over my rutted acreage and with the 'Harley' engine going "potato , potato, potato.":laughing:

Loctite blue, I thought was for permanent assembly.

I have been using the red, so fasteners can be removed at a later date, if need be.
