what missing from the carburetor choke

This is a 2008 brigs engine 190cc 6.75 with primer bulb. Had aftermarket carb installed, ran fine until last week then would not start. Found that i have to close and secure with a rubber band the butterfly choke closed to get it to start. Once it starts I remove the rubber band and the governor rod and rpm lever move back and forth cutting in and out, although it runs it's wont cut and dies out due to the erratic rpm's. I can't find any information on this model, is it missing a spring form the chock to the governor linkage or missing some other part, again ran fine until last week. Took it all apart and clean it with no difference, new filters.

- Will start but only if I force butterfly choke closed
- the rpm governor linkage then moves back and forth causing low power and erratic rpms
- I assume the butterfly choke I mention is the black shaped u-piece, normally i thought this would have an air vane arm but there's never been one that I know of.

Hello rs334,

We need the information off of the valve cover or stamped into the metal fan shroud. Some engine had the numbers etched into the flat side of the engine case on the opposite side from the carburetor.

There were many of these engines built with these basic dimensions but customized for the different mower manufacturers.

First problem is that a primer bulb carburetor was replaced with a manual or automatic choke model that the engine was never equipped for.

The hunting and surging problem is likely debris in the fuel bowl blocking a jet or one of the passages in carburetor. The next possibility is debris blocking the fuel screen in the bottom of the fuel tank.

It is the 124T02-0161-B1 version of the engine the numbers are gone, but determined this engine type a few years ago while doing maintenance. Will try cleaning the carb jets and fuel lines, but also wondering if I'm missing a spring or air vane on that carb lever.
 
Toro numbers don’t wear off, they are located on an ID tag under the grass rear chute cover or on the back of the deck. Engine numbers are probably on the metal shield over the muffler. You need to look a little harder, they are there.
