Honda HR-214 blade holder went askew while running

After installing new rings etc, I still don't feel like I have everything right, but decided to give it a run. About 1/2 in I went to pick up some branches leaving it running (no blade or drive engaged) and all of a sudden it made a racket (scary). I shut it down. The blade is now at an angle. I found it odd on assembley that the spring didn't seem to a guide. There were no leftover parts, didn't see anything in the manual.

Looks like the clutch bolt was not tightened properly. Going to have to remove the blade and clutch to find the problem.

You know, I was just thinking the same thing, I didn't even check it. I'll give it a look tomorrow, maybe some loctite on it. Thanks for the reply.
 
what torque did you use, and have you checked your torque wrench lately to see if it is accurate? Overtightening or undertightening can cause that. If it was undertightened it could have backed out. If it was over tightened it could have stripped or broken. Honda manuals online for the HR214, although there is more than one year HR214, lists 36 - 43 ft lbs. Your owner manual should have it. I looked it up once for my Toro, printed a couple adhesive labels, and stuck them on the deck so I don't have to look the number up each time the blade is serviced.

I didn't look up the torque spec, but my manual says the same as your spec. I also noticed there was a specific way to insert the drive joint assembly with the pins aligned, which I didn't know, so I think I'm going to do do that as well.
 
Popped the engine loose this morning so I could align the splines correctly (the roll pins on either end need to line up the same). Tightened down the center bolt to 40ft lbs, along with the blade. I think all is good as far as that goes. I am still having issues with the speed control, I've been running it in the choke position, anything else is too low rpm. Also the drive seems to be stuck in 2nd, cable seems to move.

This was a freebie off Craigslist btw.
