briggs fuel pump issue

Using a Briggs engine on a wood splitter I built. About a 2 years ago the original fuel pump quit so I got a new OEM Mikuni. Put it on and worked fine. A year later, it went out again. Once again, bought an OEM and worked fine for a spitting job I had. Went to start it today and after that one time use, it's dead again. This time I've ordered a knockoff brand but want to know what brand/model of electric would be good to use if this one dies as well? Been VERY frustrating. The original pump worked fine for 8 years with no issues. I do run ethanol fuel but to die after a single use points to factory issues.Anyone else run into this? It's a 25 HP Briggs and a 808656 Fuel pump.

Please post the model, type and code numbers from the engine. That way we will know the exact engine you are dealing with.
 
It's a Briggs Intek V twin 25 HP engine. Model 445777, type 0231 E1, Code 03102240. Mikuni pump # is 027013 with Briggs # being 808656. Line from tank gravity feeds out quickly, no obstructions. Engine runs perfect with gas or either sprayed into air inlet. Pump is used on a lot of engines. It's just not pumping anything no matter how much it is cranked. Fuel delivery issue.

Google "HEP-02A" or "EP-500-0". Now you will need new fuel lines as these are 5/16 fittings and a little oil or soap to get the 1/4" lines on with appropriate clamps. Plus you would need to find a way to mount it securely.
 
It's worth doing a thorough check of the impulse line as Andrew suggests. If that line has even a hairline crack or is partially blocked, the diaphragm never gets the pressure pulse it needs to operate. A damaged impulse port on the engine block could also be causing repeated pump failures rather than the pumps themselves being defective out of the box. Also, seconding the HEP-02A suggestion from StarTech. Just keep the output pressure at or below 4 psi. The Intek carb doesn't need much, and too much pressure will flood it. Wire it to a switched 12V source so it only runs when the key is on.

Mikuni makes great carburetors and fuel pumps. You need to check impulse line and fuel lines as stated previously.
 
And it can be a fuel tank venting issue too. When the pump doesn't work check the in fuel line for a vacuum. Recently had a JD X310 when the fuel tank vent valve became inoperative. Instead taking everything apart I just installed a vented fuel cap. IE I took the non-vented fuel cap and changed it to a vented cap like on the X360 sitting beside it.

Also there have been a problem with these vacuum operated pumps which the internal check valves are curling up and no longer are one way valves. After markets are especially prone to this problem.
 
I popped the fuel tank lid opened and cranked and nothing. poured some gas in and ran fine till it burned that off and then died. No gas drawn by pump. I then went to the impulse line. It does spin very easily on the cover. I removed it and pulled a vacuum and it holds. Could it be it is too loose on the metal cover and leaking there? Anyone have a part #? New pump should arrive today.
