Grasshopper 727T6 Sudden Massive Engine Oil Leak

I have a Grasshopper front deck mower.
Grasshopper 727T6 mower Serial # 3815604.
The engine is a Kohler CH740S, Spec # CH740 - 0096, Ser # 3719900101, Engine Build Date 07/18/2007.

I was mowing, and SUDDENLY it started smoking heavily and engine oil was pouring out the back somewhere.
It lost a quart or more of oil in a minute or so.
Oil got on the pulleys in back and the deck stopped working, I assume from belt slippage.

I've checked the oil cooler lines, and there's no fresh oil on them or any sign of oil having leaked out there.
What could be causing this all of a sudden loss of engine oil?

Those engines are prone to the crank seal on the PTO end just falling out of the block. Pull the PTO clutch and check the seal.
One question, in researching this, I saw another place where it said "A bad crankcase breather (reed valve) can build pressure and push it out".
Can this commonly be true? (I hope not)
Or is it usually a case of age? the engine was built in 2007.

A Kohler Command is a great engine in general. Never heard of any small engine being “prone to blowing out the main top or bottom crankshaft seal”, much less a Kohler Command.

The particular Grasshopper uses a horizontal shaft Kohler. It's very possible that the output shaft seal is gone.

What I have seen on the command engines that have several hundred hours over several years is the seals harden which leads them to get loose in their sealing bores and then basically fall out.

Of course I have seen main seals go out on both vertical and horizontal engines. That is not what I was saying. I said Kohler Command engines specifically are not prone to blowing out the main seals.
