What does this sound indicate?

Briggs Engine Model 31S877 0001 G1 160418ZD, OEM Carburetor 594593

It does this every few seconds, sometimes four and five in a row. It's like the ignition has been turned off, then immediately back on before it stops spinning. Listen to attachment.

Additional Info: I cut the yard about ten days ago and this started near the end of the job. Then two days ago, it started well and I cut grass about 15 minutes, then it started this again but continued running while I finished. After that, it would not start, popped a few times disengaging the starter. I smelled gas, maybe flooded. It would not start yesterday, same thing. Tonight, it popped on the first try, disengaging starter. Tried again and got started after a couple of pops. As of this writing, it's been running but with the continuous behavior as you will hear in the MP3 attachment.

put an ignition tester or timing light on it, and watch to see if you are losing the spark. You know the drill - fuel mixture, spark, and compression. When an engine doesn't fire properly, one of those is missing. Your job is to figure out which. We can't do it from a sound file. Also make sure that the any fire arrestor screen on the exhaust is not plugged with carbon and rust flakes.

Me for one as I am not afraid of files that the virus scanner passes.

Sounds more like a sneeze.

Might not be the case but it could be an intake manifold air leak. I had one about 5 yrs that had a random sneezing pattern.

But as said it can be ignition related such as a bad ignition coil or spark plug. It is more those rare problems that can takes a lot of troubleshooting to find the problem.
 
Going with lack of fuel delivery. Trash in the tank and or lines or dirty carb. Could be last years fuel and water. That sound is a slow hunting sound. Bet the throttle is moving to wide open when she sneezes.

Make a video of the carb linkage and post the link here so we can watch the carb linkage.
