My personal experience with the 500 head is that any string under .130 will melt within 10 minutes of use and will not advance. The replacement head Echo sent me did the same thing. The problem seems to be the giant piece of metal inside the head transmits heat from the gearhead to the spool. On the bright side, it will hold about 15 feet of .130 and that lasts a long, long time.

I have speed feed 400
Been using Husqvarna Titanium .095, never welded string.

Read the 500 head has some metal in head and that causes the welding.

It's not the string.

I never had any issues with the 400 head. I only know that the .095 and even .105 will melt on the 500. .130 doesn't melt for me.

Remember to dunk the line in water. Keeps it more resilient and stronger. Nylon line just like fishing line dries out over time. Helps keep the curling out of the line as well.

Read long ago the 500 head was gonna be recalled. For that reason. Guess they never did.

I've had my 400 head over 10 + years.
It welded some real cheap line. Since then, I use only Husqvarna Titanium .095, been golden ever since.

This thread is about the Speed Feed 500 head. The 400 works great. The 500 tends to weld line under .130 diameter in my experience.

A trick that a landscaper showed me years ago was to dunk the cutter head with line in water to keep the line cool and it actually improves line feeding and line cutting strength. Nylon cutter line gets resilient when kept wet.

Even old cutting line can be rejuvenated by soaking it in water overnight. I've done that when all I had on hand was some line that had sit for a couple of years. It worked.
