Hour meter display is unreadable. Where are the run time hours stored?

I have a Scag Cheetah and the hour meter display is cactus - just shows random lines. Just wondering where the runtime hours are stored, i.e. if I replace the meter will it start at zero? If possible I want to retain the actual runtime hours.

Unless the engine is EFI with a computer the run hours are stored in the hour meter and will be lost with its replacement.

Thanks for the prompt response and bugger, I'm a B&S Commercial Series 27HP so old tech. Never mind...

Do you know if a replacement is its simply a matter of popping the old one out and reconnecting wires?
