Transmission for a craftsman tractor model 917250830

Having difficulty putting in gear forward and reverse have to step on brake to change from forward to reverse and reverse to forward. Told I need new transmission costing $800 plus $300 labor. First can this be fixed by changing the transmission fluid if so how is it done told a closed unit. Second if I have to replace transmission what is the replacement transmission where can I find it and about how much. Is this a job for a amateur? Thanks
 
The General Transmissions RS800F does not have transmission fluid per say. It is not a hydrostatic transaxle but is a CVT transaxle which has grease.

I let other with more experience with this plastic housed transaxle answer farther as I only got a couple customers with these.
