I have an older Neuton mower. It is a 14" cut with a 24volt battery. It needs a new battery and a charger. It will cost about $65 or more to buy these on eBay or elsewhere. Is it worth it in your opinion?

It all depends on how emotionly attached you are to your old mower. It will certainly cost you a lot more to buy a modern new mower that uses lithium ion batteries, but it will offer significant advantages in lower weight and faster recharge time. Also, you can probably rebuild your battery for a fraction of the cost of buying a new one, since it consists of two ordinary 12 volt SLA batteries wired in series.

I admit to being ignorant of the Neuton battery system. Does Neuton offer other tools that use that battery?

If not, another argument supporting a newer mower is the availability of yard care items like blowers, string trimmers, hedge clippers, and perhaps even common household/garage tools like drills, sanders, and flashlights that use the same battery system.

Ryobi has a 16" mower - my SIL likes his.

Neuton is the last of the cordless lawn mower manufacturers to stick with SLA battery technology. They currently sell two models, a 14” cut with a 24 volt, 10 Ah SLA battery and a 19” cut with a 36 volt, 10 Ah SLA battery. These batteries are unique to the mowers and are removable for recharging, which takes from 8 to 14 hours. Needless to say, the mowers are quite heavy, 50 lbs for the 14” and 69 lbs for the 19”. Also, maximum cut height is only 3.0”, which is inadequate for summer grass cutting in hot climates. They may have made sense back in the day before the advent of affordable lithium-ion battery powered lawn mowers, but they are now just an oddity.

I am not attached to it. I just like to add value if I can and keep things out of the junk yard for a few years if feasible.

The price I quoted above included rebuilding the existing battery with two SLA batteries available on EBay.

I can't make up my mind. Thanks.

I just picked up one of these for free. It's worth keeping if you have like a problem area with a regular mower being too heavy going slanted across lawn.. like me where I have a downgrade Hill that goes into a fence..
You can still buy the battery new from manufacturer

The battery system is unique in that the outer case is required to connect it to the machine. The charging port is also built into the case. It does seem like a robust system. You can take the battery out of the machine to charge it. If you have two, as many do you can keep working when the 1st battery dies by just swapping them out.

The individual SLA batteries are 12v common batteries you can get on line from many sources.
I dont know why they dont convert them to LI-ION. Other than cost.

Still, a new 24 volt battery box is now 130 and the 36V is 150 directly from the MFG.

Tough to find these elsewhere.

If you decide to scrap the mower, I'd be interested. Mine is broken where the top attaches to the sides. I'll need the whole top piece.
