A friend gave me a Craftsman self propelled (used to be) Lawn mower. Model 917.376571 -- S/N 020205M 000393.

The engine starts OK but the self propelled part is cooked. He said that the gears in the wheels are stripped. Does anyone know how to see the year of this mower and if it is worth fixing?

Thank You

The part itself cost 15.16 plus shipping which I think is 8 bucks. It is the front wheel drive wheel right? This would be for just the wheel if it is stripped there is a Pinion attached to the shaft and if that is torn up you will need to replace that too. A picture would help if you can do that.

Hello Derson59,

I have not taken it apart yet. Too much on my plate. Was hoping this was a common problem with this model. Is the pinion metal or nylon? I have posted some photos.

Thanks

It looks like it is a metal pinion. It also looks like it is on the outside of the deck. I would say if it is the wheel that is damaged then yes get the replacement and it would be worth it. If you are able to just take the nut off the wheel it should be located right inside of it. I would think that any small engine repair shop would have that wheel for you. here is the part number for the wheel. 194231X427. If you want you can also look up parts on http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Craftsman-Parts/Walk-behind-lawn-mower-Parts/Model-917376571/0247/1500600?pathTaken=&prst=0&shdMod=917376571

Hope this helps

To know what year that the engine was made, post all of the numbers on the plate right above the muffler.

Not sure about the engine, but the mower was built 02Feb05 from the serial number shown in the pic.
