10201 problems

I just got a lawn boy 10201 without self-propel. It is not starting up. The brake cable looks like there is a frayed apart and there is some spark but not a whole lot. I believe that it is just the brake cable not being pulled hard enough. Does that sound right to anyone? I took a screw driver and placed it into the spark plug socket and pulled on the rope that DID spark. It has a new spark plug in it as well with fresh gas. Kind of stumped on this one. I will be doing a carb clean but only if I cannot get the mower started. Any help would be much appreciated.

To be honest I'm not familiar with a 10201. But my 10323 will run with the cable removed. I suspect if you get a spark with a screwdriver, it may be the cable. Try removing it if it is frayed anyway. The cable usually doesn't have to move that far to short out the ignition.

Hi Derson,

Make sure the brake is being released and you have spark, Then-
Take the air filter cover and filter off and squirt a little mix into the carb throat and give it a few pulls. Throttle is kind of bass ackwards. Choke is all the way forward (down in front), high is just a little pulled up and slow is all the way back on the lever. If it runs on prime then quits, service carb. Service manual is available on lawnboys website. It is very informative. Please download it. Soaking carb (even in heated ultrasonic with simple green, water and vinegar)will loosen welch plugs and they will fly away when you blow the carb out with compressed air. Don't lose 'em as there is only one in carb gasket kit K11-LMR, I speak from experience!! I only found one of them. Put old and new back in place and sealed with wife's clear nail polish.

If you take off the carb, follow the service manual to the letter, the whole thing, cable and all comes off together. This is very very very important.

When you put it back together, follow manual exactly, don't get in a hurry. When pre-loading the governor, it calls for 3 clicks to the right, that would be COUNTERCLOCKWISE.

Now you all know where I had my troubles on my refurb, hope yours goes smooth and you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

Thank you for the info. I notice that the brake is only pulled in a very little bit. Is this like yours? I have the manual from their site. I will do the cleaning to the letter. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Derson,

Not sure just how much it moves, but ignition kill switch is either closed or open, no kinda in between, sota kinda thing. You just have to make sure the "brake pad" is not touching anything, motor will be hell to pull thru, and possibly no spark. You need to take the tank and shroud off to see. You may already know this, if so sorry, but maybe it will help someone else. Go ahead and give her shot and report back. You won't break anything.
So you know, I've been working on mowers, generators, weed eaters, etc. for a long time, but this was my first Lawnboy!

Thank you all for the info. I took off the brake cable and well she runs great. It is the cable and I also did adjust the igniter assembly as well. Very impressed with this little mower still runs great. Now time to order the new part and she should work great. :laughing:
