Engine build date of May '76, looks like. So the mower could be late 76- early 77.

BASED ON WHAT I SEE I WOULD SAY MID TO LATE 70'S. IT HAS FLARED REAR FENDERS, SINGLE MOUNT REAR DECK HANGERS AND A STEEL BELT GUARD, ALL OF WHICH I BELIEVE ARE PRE 1980. SEE MY RESTO AT "AN OLDIE BUT A GOODY". GREAT CANDIDATE FOR A FULL ON RESTO I WOULD SAY.

It's like the 1975 and 1976 models. The last year they used a steel guard on the deck was 1977 and they were painted red instead of white. White guards were used in prior years. If you ever see one that has a deck guard painted red from the factory, they had troubles with the long and short axel gears for the 1977 year only. There was a problem with the gears wearing prematurely which most were replaced under warranty with no problems. 1978 and later comets had plastic deck guards. Thanks!!!
