I just acquired today a YardMan mower - I believe it's a 2006 model. The info under the seat is:
MODEL NUMBER
13AN771G755
1663689
The problem seems to be with the feature that prevents the mower from doing certain things when the PTO is engaged. When you try to start it, it normally won't even attempt to start unless I engage/disengage the PTO lever several times. It is as if it doesn't "realize" that the PTO is actually disengaged.
Also - sometimes it will go in reverse and sometimes it won't. Also probably related to the PTO safety feature.
Near the ignition there is a yellow button that I believe you are supposed to be able to push to enable going in reverse when the PTO is engaged. This button doesn't do anything. Also, there are 2 positions for the key when the engine is running - one for "Normal" and one says Safety reverse or something like that. This doesn't allow me to go in reverse - the engine kills.
I believe that if there is just a short, or if it's a small part needing replacement, I can do it myself - I'm pretty handy, but this is my first experience with riding mowers - always had a super-small yard before.
I wanted to try taking the thing apart to see what's underneath the big piece under the seat - in the area of the PTO lever, but I wanted to see what you guys thought first.
I appreciate any help in advance!

it sounds like your pto switch is bad or its not engaging all the way....you may be able to bypass it by pulling the connectors and either hooking them together or keeping them from touching each other....i dont know if you have a manual ....but you might be have to clutch to engage the safety reverse deal...also i believe your reverse switch is just inside your left rear wheel with one wire to it....you can just pull it off and see if that solves your problem......heres a manual access... http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/Public.do .....tell us what you find:smile:
if the headlights are unplugged or not working on these models that reverse feature won't work. the reverse safety feature is wired through the headlights.
Thanks guys, I will look into this more. I found that one of the headlight bulbs I missing. I will try putting some electrical wire between the connectors or just buying a new headlight. Also, do you think there is some sort of "device" that tells the mower that the PTO is off? How do I go about getting under there? Do I just start removing bolts? Lol

i believe its identical to my yard machines....you need to take battery out ..then battery holder...and youll have access to drive belts.....pto [blade engage lever] swich on the right and start solenoid on your left...etc..etc..
I have the exact mower with the same problem. The problem was with blade safety switch. The lever wasn't pushing it down far enough.
I unhook it and put a jumper wire on one side and taped it up.
